I had just spent the entire weekend decorating our home for the holidays with the exception of one small room… the nursery!
Sure, our new baby girl won’t be here until after the holidays (ideally), but I felt like I just needed to add a little spark of holiday cheer in this room as well!
I had just gotten some new chalk paints, brushes, and other painting supplies from Walmart Home, took a peek at my scrap wood pile hanging out in our garage, and grabbed some scrap materials from different parts of our nursery makeover.
I was determined to create simple holiday decor for less!

DIY CANE HOLIDAY TREES WITH THE HELP OF WALMART CHALK PAINTS
To start, I grabbed some 1×2 boards from my scrap pile and cut one board in half at a 45 degree angle. I flipped the other half of that board down to meet up with the 45 degree angle to create a point on the top of the triangle (see the image below)!

Then I cut the bottom of each board at 22.5 degrees and lined up a third board to be the bottom of my triangle – each side cut outward at a 22.5 degree angle as well to continue the line and create the bottom two points of the triangle!
Then for the tree trunk, I cut a small board and trimmed each angle to 22.5 degrees as well to place on the bottom!
I wood glued and nailed the boards together, then wood filled all the seams and nail holes before decorating them!

Once they were dry, sanded, and ready for paint, I grabbed my new beautiful chalk paints from Walmart!
I chose the Sage, White, and Slate colors for my trees!
I painted them using chalk paint brushes and allowed them to dry completely!
Then I grabbed some scrap cane webbing that I had leftover from the built-ins and dresser I DIY-ed in the nursery. I flipped the trees over, and stapled the cane webbing to the back of the trees. I cut the extra off with scissors, then turned the trees back to facing forward so the cane looked neat and clean!
They found a perfect spot here on our new nursery shelves, and I just love how they turned out!
SHOP THE WALMART ITEMS I USED TO CREATE MY TREES

Whether you’re looking to make the exact trees I made or put your own spin on them, you’ll have great luck shopping Walmart Home’s Hello Hobby Paint and their Hello Hobby DIY sections!
Here are some of the paints and brushes I used along with a few other painting options (including a distressing kit) if you’d love them to look a little more worn and aged!
This project was simple! And it allowed me to use up a lot of scrap wood that I had sitting in my garage taking up space. Not to mention I was able to use some scrap materials from our nursery makeover to create these trees FOR the nursery – how fun is that?
Nothing like a simple DIY to take your holiday decor up a notch! And to think if I had never snagged these pretty chalk paints from Walmart Home, I never would have given them a try this season!
MAKE IT YOUR OWN!

As always, make sure to add your own personal touches to make it your own! You could swap out the paint colors, what you fill your trees with – even the size and shape of your trees based on what you have on hand! There’s no right or wrong way to create a holiday craft you love and will love for years to come!
