Let’s talk hair.
But before we do that, let me preface this with the fact that I am not a beauty blogger. Not that you needed to hear that because after you read this post, you’ll see for yourself.
My beauty routine is all about function and ease. I’ve tried tons of high end products only to go back to drug store products that are tried and true.
I’ve spent my fair share of time and money attempting (so hard) to clean up my hair and makeup routine to include natural, chemical-free options.
But then I always go back to my favorites.
It’s actually something I shy away from sharing because you know I always like to share healthier alternatives, but what I’ve learned over time is…
MODERATION
When transitioning to a chemical-free home and life, you don’t have to be perfect. You can still color your hair with chemicals and then use an all-natural shampoo.
You can still use that drug store mascara, but that natural foundation.
You do you. Whatever effort you make to rid chemicals from your home and body is fantastic, even if there are some products you simply can’t let go of quite yet.
Okay, now that I’m off that soap box, let me share the most basic, drug store brand hair care tutorial you might ever see.

THE MOST BASIC HAIR CARE ROUTINE YOU WILL EVER SEE
A question I get often is, “What do you do to your hair to make it look so healthy and grow so long?”
So let me start by saying that hair care for me boils down to ease. I don’t have a ton of time in the mornings to spend on it. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on it when I know I’m going to be working from home and taking care of the babies.
But what I need is a length and style that works to make my everyday routine easier.
I have tried short and long hair, and I’ve found that when I cut my hair, I actually have to spend much more time styling it.
When I let it grow long, I don’t have to do much of anything to it.
Long it is!
THE SECRETS
SECRET #1 – Leave it alone.
You want to know my arsenal of secrets for long, healthy hair? Leave it alone! There, I said it. See told you I’m not a beauty blogger!
But if you want your hair to look and feel healthy, start by limiting the amount of heat you put on it regularly.
Often times, I will let my hair air dry and/or sleep on it wet to avoid blowing it dry.
SECRET #2 – Don’t wash it.
I know, I know. Not a beauty blogger. But truly, if you want shiny, healthy, long hair, don’t strip all the oils out of it on a regular basis!
I only wash my hair 1-2 times per week. This allows my hair to regulate the amount of oil it produces and keeps it healthier.
This also helps to limit the amount of heat I need to use on it regularly!
SECRET #3 – You are what you eat.
Another thing I’m super keen on is eating a healthy diet. One thing I have found that makes a big difference when it comes to healthy hair and skin is consuming healthy fats.
I have found when I get my fair share of Omega-3s that my skin and hair reap the benefits!
Some of my favorite ways to do this are by primarily cooking with coconut and avocado oils. I snack on walnuts, make avocado toast regularly, replace butter with coconut oil on bagels and toast, and drizzle avocado oil and sea salt over my popcorn.
I also supplement with collagen regularly for healthy skin, hair, nails, and a healthy gut. Primal Kitchen Collagen Fuel is my favorite!
If your diet isn’t up to par, your hair might not be either! Just sharing from my experience!
MY ROUTINE & PRODUCTS
But anyways, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. My hair care routine and products I swear by.
I usually wash my hair at night and let it air dry and/or dry while I’m sleeping.
My go-to shampoo and conditioner right now are… dare I say it… Dove Oxygen. Nope, not kidding. It’s a simple drug store brand but I love the way it cleans my hair and adds a little volume in the process!
I just shampoo and condition and let it dry on it’s own.
The next morning, I usually brush it out and style it. I have a lot of fine hair. It’s a strange combo, I know, and the crazy thing about my hair is it’s nice and curly on the bottom and straight on the top.
Yep. Super fun to deal with.
So the mornings after I wash my hair, I usually brush it out and grab my straightener.
I straighten all the frizzy pieces and crazy curls so it falls nicely and looks like it was styled intentionally, but I don’t usually focus on getting it stick straight.
Then when I need to, I’ll add a touch of hairspray to help with volume on the top, but I usually just let it fall how it falls!
My favorite hairspray is another drug store option – TREsumme!
Just a touch on top and to calm down any frizz around my face, and that’s it!
IN BETWEEN WASHES
What do I do with my hair in between washes, you ask? Dry shampoo!
My absolute favorite, go-to, swear by dry shampoo is Moroccan Oil Light Tones Dry Shampoo.
It literally makes my hair feel like I just washed it, and the scent isn’t overpowering. I tell everyone I know that they have to switch to this dry shampoo!
I usually use it on days 3, 4, and 5 if I make it to 5 days!
THE BOTTOM LINE
The bottom line is, healthy hair doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. You don’t have to go spend a ton of money on the highest end hair care products.
You just have to find what works for you!
And really, for me, what it all comes down it is taking care of your body and your hair. Don’t wash it like crazy, allow the oil in your hair to regulate and nourish your hair.
Eat to help your hair thrive and provide it with healthy vitamins, minerals, and fats.
And supplement! When you do those things, healthy hair follows and you have to spend less to get the hair you want. At least that’s what I’ve found!
Plus, make sure you do what works best for you always. If you want to wash your hair daily, do it! But maybe throw on a hair mask every once in a while to help keep your hair moisturized and healthy.
If you want short, styled hair, go for it! But maybe give your hair a break from the heat every now and again.
No hair care routine is a bad routine. Just focus on what you like best, and make sure to take care of your hair in the process!
