Wow, what a week! As closures and lockdowns continue to expand around the globe, it’s truly setting in how serious of a situation this truly is.
I love getting out and about, shopping around, and spending time with friends. But since just about all of that is off the table right now, I’m trying to focus in on a few things I can control
One of those is keeping my family as healthy as possible! With a resident physician husband, we aren’t far from this virus. If anything, we’re pretty at risk of catching it when it all comes down to it.
And while we’re taking measures and precautions when he goes to and from the hospital, I think it’s really only a matter of time before it hits at least one person in our family.
We can’t control the fact that he still has to show up for these patients every day, and that he should! But we can take care of ourselves at home.
I am by no means an expert, but here are a few things we’re doing to keep our immune systems revved up in case we have to fight off this virus!

HOW WE’RE TRYING TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
WAY #1: WATCH WHAT YOU EAT
Everyone seems to be running to the grocery stores to buy up all the canned goods and junk foods that will last a while, but what we need to realize is those foods are not going to help our bodies if they get sick!
We’re choosing to focus on eating whole foods, lots of fruits and veggies, and eliminating as much sugar from our diets as humanly possible.
Antioxidants and essential vitamins that you’ll get from eating these foods will help boost your immune system and ward off unnecessary inflammation to help your body fight invaders faster and more easily.
An excess amount of sugar can also limit the response of your immune system, so we’re really trying to cut out added sugars when we can!
The interesting thing is that in our stores, fruits and veggies are in abundance still! It’s all the middle aisles that have taken a hit. The reality is that it should be the opposite!
If you’re trying to stock up so you don’t have to go out as often, buy frozen fruits and veggies and freeze meats! You have options! Plus, this virus isn’t causing a national food shortage, so rest assured grocery stores will fill back up. This is temporary!
And just as a disclaimer, this is all my researched opinion! I’m not a doctor and I don’t play one on tv, but I have done my fair share of research on eating to heal your body and have worked in the wellness industry for years!
WAY #2: GET OUTSIDE
Now hear me when I say I’m not encouraging you to go be around people! But social distancing doesn’t mean you need to stay locked inside your home for weeks on end.
Get out in the yard, do some gardening, go for a walk or a run, play on the swingset (your own!), or just lay in the grass and look at the clouds.
You need vitamin D, especially to help stay healthy, and my favorite way to get this essential vitamin is by being outside!
Plus, the fresh air will help put your mind at ease, and we all need that right about now!
WAY #3: MAKE SURE TO SLEEP!
I’m not following this like I should, but sleep is so important to keep your body healthy and in prime condition to ward off illness. Your body repairs itself while you’re sleeping, and it needs the time to do that!
Make sure you’re creating and sticking to a sleep schedule for yourself and your family, even if it seems counterintuitive right now!
WAY #4: USE ESSENTIAL OILS
There are many essential oils out there that can help keep you healthy and boost your immune system! Some of my favorites right now are eucalyptus, orange, lemon, rosemary, tea tree, and so many others.
I’m also loving this germ-fighting oil blend, which is a blend of many of the above.
Always make sure to do your own research when it comes to amounts to use, how to dilute, and what’s safe for children!
WAY #5: DIY ELDERBERRY SYRUP
Another little booster we’re using right now is Elderberry Syrup! This is a natural way to ward off illness. I love this simple DIY Elderberry Syrup kit and am taking 2 tsp – 1 tbsp per day to stay healthy! Do your research to find out what proper dosing recommendations are for different age groups!
My kids love it too!
HERE’S THE THING…
We can’t guarantee that being as healthy as we can will ward off this virus, but we can do our part to make sure our bodies are in tip-top shape so that is we do get infected, we can fight it!
