If you’ve been following along with me for a minute, you know how much I love feature walls! They add so much design and character to a space. They add interest to a room without you having to go crazy adding decor. They create a clear focal point in a space.
Feature walls can be as difficult or as easy as you want to make them. And for my garage workshop project, I wanted an easy way to create a dedicated workshop area!

That’s why I went with Wallplanks! They offer a beautiful variety of planks with Vacuubond adhesive backing. So if using a lot of power tools maybe aren’t your thing, you can still get the look you want without having to buy or rent many tools!
Wallplanks are a great beginner level DIY project. But they are also a great solution for any feature wall that you know you’re going to want to keep around for a long time (or don’t want to have to spend a ton of time on)!
Think of these planks as being a finished feature wall you’re adding to your home. It’s all done for you, you just need to install it!
I knew I wanted something different and unique in my garage workshop. After all, if you can’t go a little outside your comfort zone in a garage, where can you?
So I opted for the Grey Largo Oak panels from Wallplank’s Acoustic Wall Collection. They’re beautiful planks that gave me the slat wall vibes I wanted without the time commitment and headache! Not to mention I thought the noise dampening felt on the back of these planks would be perfect to help contain the sounds of power tools!
But Wallplanks has tons of options depending on your project and your style including shiplap boards and reclaimed wood options!

HOW I TRANSFORMED MY GARAGE WORKSHOP WALLS WITH THE HELP OF WALLPLANKS
So I grabbed what I needed and got to work!
STEP 1: MEASURE & GATHER YOUR MATERIALS
First things first, measure the square footage of your wall and use that to help you place your Wallplanks order!
Here’s what I used…
And here are the tools you need…
STEP 2: DETERMINE YOUR STARTING POINT & LEVEL YOUR FIRST ROW

The first thing you want to do is determine where you want to start! For my boards, I decided to begin in the lefthand corner of the wall.
The boards I used can be installed vertically, horizontally, and even in a herringbone pattern. I opted for vertical to draw the eye up!
I also opted to stagger my boards so the seams didn’t line up together. This is all personal preference! Do whatever you think will work best for your Wallplanks feature wall.
Make sure your first board and your first row is level! This is the most important step in my opinion because it determines how the rest of your wall looks.
STEP 3: INSTALL YOUR PANELS

Next, peel off the backing on your Wallplanks and stick it on the wall (again, making sure it’s level). Use your hands to apply pressure on the board.

Then continue your installation! I used my miter saw to cut some boards in half so I could stagger mine on the wall.

I also used my jigsaw to cut the boards to fit around outlets and light switches!
But mainly I simply continued to peel off the backing and stick the panels to the wall. So simple!
STEP 4: J-ROLL YOUR PLANKS

When you’re finished with the installation, grab your J-roller. This is a very important tool that will help apply even pressure to your boards to ensure all the adhesive is on the wall so your feature wall can stand the test of time!
Roll every board on your feature wall.
STEP 5: ADD SOME SCREWS & CLEAN YOUR BOARDS

Lastly, you’ll want to do through and add a couple screws to each board to ensure they remain on the wall as long as you want them there! This step was very simple and only took me about 15 minutes.
I just took the screws and drill bit that came with my Wallplanks and added two per board. I placed them in the upper right hand corner about 6 inches from the top of the board and in the bottom left hand corner, again 6 inches from the bottom of the board.

When I was finished adding the screws, I took my Wood Wall Cleaner, sprayed some directly on a microfiber cloth, then wiped down all the slats to make sure no sawdust remained on them!
STEP 6: STEP BACK AND ADMIRE YOUR WORK!
And that’s it! Now that you’re done, step back and admire your new beautiful feature wall! YOU DID IT! And it was so easy, right?
