It can be easy to get caught up into having to purchase new items every time you want to update a space.
But the reality of it is — you don’t have to do that! Your style is your style, so odds are you have exactly what you need already in your own home.
Now I’m not saying don’t buy anything new — it’s so much fun to shop for new items (that you love) to add to you home.
But you don’t have to break the bank to make a space feel brand new either.
To refresh our guest room, I decided to shop my home and use what I had to transform the space, and it turned out better than I even imagined!
So today I’ll share a few tips when it comes to shopping your home for the perfect items, and I’ll also share all the guest room sources that are still available too!

GUEST ROOM REFRESH: HOW WE SHOPPED OUR HOME TO CREATE THE PERFECT GUEST SPACE
The very first thing we did was paint the back wall of this room so our DIY headboard could stand out.
We went with Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams because we already had it and because it’s one of the accent colors we use in our home already!

HOW DO YOU SHOP YOUR OWN HOME?
It’s as easy as it sounds, but I like to follow a few steps to make sure I’m getting my money’s worth out of the exercise, if you will.
STEP 1: MAKE A LIST OF ITEMS YOUR ROOM NEEDS
First things first, go through the space you’re updating and make a list of all the items it’s missing or the spaces that could use a little something.
For example, I noticed I needed a new rug, something for one of the corners, decor for the dresser and nightstand, and some new pillows now that we had changed the wall color.
STEP 2: SEARCH YOUR HOME WITH A CRITICAL EYE
Now, walk around your home with those items in mind, and look for items that you aren’t appreciating in their current homes anymore.
Maybe these are items you’ve put somewhere and never moved.
Maybe these are items you simply don’t love or appreciate where they are. They’re just taking up space.
Or maybe these are items you love but you simply think they will work better in the new space.
And the biggest tip here… don’t skip over the rugs! Rugs take up a large footprint in a room and can make or break the overall design.
So one thing I love doing here is playing musical rugs around my home. Swap them all out for a brand new look in each space!
STEP 3: START TO ADD YOUR ITEMS TO THEIR NEW HOME & MAKE NOTE OF THE GAPS
Once you’ve collected your items, you’ll simply start playing around with them in your new space to see if they work.
As you begin putting the space together, make note where there are still gaps and items your room needs.
Also make note of any gaps you left when you took items from other areas!
I like to make a list so whenever I’m out at a store, I can take a quick peek to see if I see anything I love enough to fill those gaps.
Shop over time and intentionally for items you truly love — don’t just shop to fill the gaps! You’ll find the perfect items!
